Pregnancy

With pregnancy comes excitement, fear, questions and choices...but what are they?

You could consider attending birth classes to help you decide the type of birth you would like and

how to make the most of the options open to you...

You will have many thing to decide such as:

  • Where are you going to have your baby?
  • What kind of birth do you want?
  • Who do you want to be your birth partner?
  • Do you have any special requirements to help you through Labour?
  • Do you want to consider pain relief?
  • Do you want your partner to cut the cord?
  • Would you like your baby to be given to you immediately after being born?
  • How would you like to feed your baby?
  • Do you want to keep your baby with you all the time?
  • Would you like the placenta to be delivered naturally?

You may have other issues:

  • Have you any cultural needs that your health professionals need to be aware of?
  • Are there any language difficulties?
  • Do you have a special diet?
  • Is transport to and from the maternity unit likely to be a problem?
  • Do you have to organize childcare for older children or pet sitting for animals?
  • What arrangements need to be made for when you go home?
  • Who will support you at home if you have had a hospital birth?

Making a birth plan may also help you to think more clearly about the possibilities that are available to you and your birth partner, aswell as talking it through with your carer or antenatal educator.
